Funding Opportunities

We are actively seeking novel projects that propose solutions to the health conditions faced by former football players. Pilot study funding will be made available throughout the course of the Football Players Health Study, and current opportunities will be listed below as they become available.

Improving the Health and Safety of Football Players: Arthritis, Sleep Apnea, and Headaches

FUNDING LEVEL
$10,000 - $150,000

DEADLINE
October 30, 2015

Eligibility

Harvard faculty at all levels are eligible to serve as principal investigator (PI). All full applications will require an electronic statement of approval signed by the PI’s division director or department chair.

Requirements

To apply, all applicants must first submit a letter of intent (LOI). They will be reviewed by the Football Players Health Study Leadership Team for scientific merit, feasibility, and relevance to the health and wellbeing of current, former, or future football players. Investigators whose LOIs hold the most promise will be invited to submit a full application. Full applications should be submitted only after invitation.

Overview

For this funding opportunity, we solicited data from thousands of former football players regarding the conditions that most affect them. We welcome proposals that are likely to contribute to the discovery of new risk factors, prevention strategies, and advanced therapies that have the potential to affect the health and wellbeing of future, current, or former football players in one of the following three areas:

  1. Arthritis, including but not limited to studies in epidemiology, prevention, diagnosis, and management of osteoarthritis.
  2. Sleep Apnea, including but not limited to studies in epidemiology, prevention, diagnosis, and management of the long-term effects of sleep apnea.
  3. Headaches, including but not limited to studies in epidemiology, prevention, diagnosis, and management of sport-related headaches, chronic headaches, and migraines.

Special weight will be given to those applications that are particularly relevant to former athletes.

Applications in only these three areas will be considered, but there is no guarantee that funding will be awarded in each category. We are soliciting research grant applications that include high-impact projects likely to yield findings and actionable results within one year.
